Tayside Forestry:
Tayside Forestry is a Christmas tree growing business in the heart of the Angus countryside. The business founded some 30 years ago by Gordon Hughes, the father of the current proprietor Brian Hughes, and which now produces some 80,000 ‘lesser needle drop’ trees every year, on 230 acres of prime land, in an environmentally friendly way, to become the largest Christmas tree grower in Tayside.
The trees are grown adjacent to the village of Auchterhouse within easy access of the city of Dundee and surrounding towns and villages. The company sells to both the retail and the wholesale markets and is able to provide quality trees throughout the United Kingdom for highly regarded, quality vendors and to the general public.
Tayside Forestry is a member of the British Christmas Tree Growers Association (BCTGA) and is backed by their guarantee of quality. Trees are now harvested by an experienced staff using state of the art harvesting equipment imported specially for this work from Denmark. The mark of quality is complimented by a competitive pricing structure to make sure customers get the best deals possible.
History:
Tayside Forestry has been in the business of growing Christmas trees for over 30 years. Gordon Hughes began growing the trees on a little 8 acre small holding in Glenshee. Over the years the business has grown dramatically to take account of the increasing demand for ‘farm fresh’ trees of the kind only produced to such a high standard in the hills and glens of Scotland. In due time Gordon’s son Brian took over the running of the business and has developed it into the thriving concern that it is today doubling its output from 40,000 to 80,000 trees per year. This phenomenal growth now sees the business unrecognisable from its small beginnings, now a huge concern employing labour from throughout the UK and Europe to be able to cope with the growing demand for these well grown carefully produced and well presented trees.
The Environment:
Despite mechanisation, growing Christmas trees has a very low impact on the environment compared with the manufacture and distribution of artificial trees It has long been known that tree plantations absorb carbon emissions, and that an acre of trees can provide enough oxygen daily for at least 18 people, as well as reducing humidity and improving air quality. Commercial tree crops therefore have a positive contribution to the environment while they are growing (for about 10 years), and each tree harvested is replaced with at least one planted the following spring,
